Resilient & Responsive:

Artists and the Environment

A group exhibition commissioned by the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability. “An exhibition dedicated to exploring our understanding of science, climate, the environment, community, and our impact on the natural world.” On display from April 11, 2024 through January 17, 2025 at The Culture Commons Gallery in Downtown San Antonio.

“With insights from artists in our community, the issue of sustainability comes to life. This exhibition prompts conversations around our environment and provokes calls to action in support of San Antonio’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. The artworks feature a range of traditional art mediums, as well as non-traditional repurposed and sustainable materials.”

When approached to create work for this show, I focused on the aspect of resiliency. I naturally looked to my surroundings for inspiration, to the landscape of San Antonio. South Texas can change from a richly green oasis to crisp, scorched, blonde earth in a matter of weeks. The vegetation that thrives here seems to do it with such grace that it seemed like the most fitting subject matter. Temperatures regularly hover in the triple digits for weeks on end, however, each of these plants has such unique characteristics that aid in their ability to thrive and remain lush in such harsh conditions. This work is a testament to resiliency and that the very traits expressed in the natural world could be the very things that helps us navigate our own resiliency moving forward.
